1.
Why do you run away, blood thick with worry Some secret hiding place in your mind To a house on a haunted hill, ghost in the garden They sing of their sorrow all through the night But all it takes is time To find your way up in to a sweeter paradigm Where you learn as you go along Simple as a song Sometimes it’s all you have, when no one can find you Cold comfort for the weight of your desire To the bottom of a wishing well, a hope notwithstanding Hard-pressed to find a light in the storm But all it takes is time To find your way up in to a sweeter paradigm Where you learn as you go along Simple as a song
2.
Sister 03:42
Sister, sister, I am with you Even in your darkest hour Brother knows you, in all you’ve been through Sunflower days never fade So hold your head up high Though the world may pass you by Take care of the light that shines inside Home of your home, love of your love All you need to carry on It’s a peaceful daydream, it finds you standing On solid ground So hold your head up high Though the world may pass you by Take care of the light that shines inside
3.
I want to know where you go when you hide away I want to know where you go when you hide away Well I’ll tell you what I do when there’s no hope to be found Some friends of mine help me get by Give me weed and wine and time I will surely be just fine Give me weed and wine and time Soon enough I’ll change my mind I want to know how it feels when you’ve got it all I want to know how it feels when you’ve got it all Do you get blue trying to choose between this life and the next? Well some friends of mine can help you get by Give me weed and wine and time I will surely be just fine Give me weed and wine and time Pretty soon I’ll change my mind I want to know where you go when you hide away I want to know where you go when you hide away When you hide away
4.
Isolation makes you sick Change the station to get your fix Feet on the ground, head out of town Maybe we could be something better We could be something better Faith in nothing, never forget Taste of heaven, free or spent Break my fever, make me sweat Nowhere to hide, all of my pride But maybe we could be something better We could find out together, maybe Maybe we could be something better We could find out together, maybe Maybe we could be something better We could find out together, maybe
5.
Today is not real, it’s only a fantasy A symptom of a flawed design Say it again, forever my company Forged in the yellow sands of time Any way the wind blows I will be faithful Any way the stars align Nothing in the world could be so hurtful To make me leave my love behind Cold-hearted days, far from the fairy tale Feeble as a cowards mind Evil is the light that shines through the corridor Leading us away from the sacred night Any way the wind blows I will be faithful Any way the stars align Nothing in the world could be so hurtful To make me leave my love behind Old lies don’t ever lose their shine Long as you hold them tight Your truth only belongs to you As long as you want it to Any way the wind blows I will be faithful Any way the stars align Nothing in the world could be so hurtful To make me leave my love behind
6.
You don’t have to go there again and again I heard you the first time And it’s never really far from my mind Your words are poison to my mind They rob me blind in broad daylight And if you knew the answer You wouldn't have to lie all the time Like all true deceivers, still you deny Your words are poison to my mind They rob me blind in broad daylight
7.
Warships 04:26
Terrible timing, terrible luck Favorite excuses for being stuck Truth is much older, wiser and gray You’ve got to be listening Heaven is open, hell is amused By every good fortune that I’ve abused A face in the crowd, a cog in a wheel Ashamed in silence On every sunken warship A story left untold Braver men than I were bought and sold Beautiful mother, fortunate child Safe from the waters running wild If I could lose my faith in the void I wouldn’t be here now Far from the letters written in stone Far from a love I would call my own Time and again I hear through the noise A chance to find out On every sunken warship A story left untold Braver men than I were bought and sold
8.
No Telling 03:21
No telling what I do just to get through to my love No telling what I say to keep my love from shame Hear the ringing of the mission bell Hear the stories that we like to tell Unnatural faith will serve you well I read between the lines to get a glimpse of my love Down underneath my skin, that’s where my love begins In the broken hearted work of art In the light that kills away the dark Unnatural faith is never far from where you are See the hero meet his great demise In the wreckage that he leaves behind There’s a certainty you can’t deny No telling what I find when I get through to my love No telling what I’ll be when I set my love free Hear the ringing of the mission bell Hear the stories that we like to tell Unnatural faith will serve you well Gonna serve you well
9.
Dry your eyes, dear, and let them see you smile Take a deep breath and walk it on down the aisle This day may not be the way you’ve always dreamed But you are doing the right thing Take his hand, love, and look him in the eyes He’s the man you will learn to love in time Just say the words and wear his pretty ring Don’t worry your secret’s safe with me Mama was a good girl and daddy was a righteous soul That’s how the story will be told Sweet little baby on the way Sweet little baby on the way God bless this union of strangers God bless this union of strangers Keep your money, son, you’re gonna need it now You tied the knot with the prettiest girl around Some say that you’re the envy of every man in town To get a girl like that to settle down Mama was a good girl and daddy was a righteous soul That’s how the story will be told Sweet little baby on the way Sweet little baby on the way God bless this union of strangers God bless this union of strangers
10.
FUBC 02:22
Moving pictures on a screen You came here with a dream Now it’s only in my head, so sad All your friends have made amends But we just fog up the lens At least there’s nothing left unsaid, so sad Truth so evil, fills your cup full Til it breaks your back If I could give time, I’d give you all of mine Let them bleed me dry But it’s only in my head At least there’s nothing left unsaid So sad, so sad, so sad
11.
Blue 04:06
Better left alone Than pushed in a corner with nowhere to go Egomaniacal head in the clouds Suddenly tumbling back to the ground Bless my soul Not so smart after all I thought it’d be easier to let you know Save you the trouble of aiming too low No better enemy than right here inside of me Can’t get over himself Best advice, don’t think twice Cut yourself loose And don’t feel blue There’s billions of beautiful colors for you to choose

about

Like the sprawling branches of a tenured Magnolia, Caleb Elliott’s sophomore album Weed, Wine & Time is beauty and grit personified. From the first track of the record (Sweeter Paradigm) Elliott lays bare a thesis of hope and healing that continues throughout the album’s entirety. Elliott’s opening chorus states that, “You learn as you go along, simple as a song,” and this theme courses like blood through each of the 11 tracks that follow.

Born and bred in a small northern Louisiana town called Natchitoches, Elliott was raised on traditional gospel and classical music. While these may not be genres he’s drawn to in adulthood, the remnants of a childhood spent practicing cello & singing church tunes around a piano with his entire family have bled into the musician, and man, he is today. Listening to WW&T is like watching the lives of Elliott, his family and his community. For Elliott though, it doesn’t stop at observing. Each paneled song of the WW&T quilt is a study in adversity, followed by a friendly hand reaching out to help. In Sister (a track that processes his sibling’s cancer battle) we find yet another trumpet call for hope amidst pain as he sings, “Hold your head up high, though the world may pass you by. Take care of the light that shines inside.”

There are songs on WW&T that began over a decade ago in Lafayette, LA elegantly woven together with younger tunes crafted in Florence, AL (the place Elliott calls his “musical home”). The result is genre defiant grandeur that traces Elliott’s personal growth over the years of his life. There are veins of JJ Cale country, the soul-jazz of Michael Kiwanuka, and the lyric fragility of Sufjan Stevens crisscrossing throughout WW&T. With these songs, Elliott’s mastery of craft and nuance are on full display. Track to track, Elliott confidently paints with the full gamut of emotion. From the spring lightness of the title track to the wrecking-ball weight of FUBC (written in honor of a lost loved one), Elliott grafts equal amounts of healing and hurt into the root system of this record. Elliott’s uncanny ability to marry ear-worm hooks with complex and honest feeling has made WW&T his most impressive album yet.

Recorded and mixed at the Florence, AL studio Sun Drop Sound, WW&T’s production is a combined effort from Elliott and his long time friend/engineer/collaborator Ben Tanner. Also lending talent to the liner notes are a cavalcade of Elliott’s music community that includes John Paul White, Zac Cockrell, AJ Haynes and Maggie Rose (among others). When combined, the resulting album has a depth chart of multiple Grammy and Americana award-winning contributors.

Weed, Wine & Time is an album replete with soothing catharsis and challenging introspection. This is an empathetic album, penned from a wide range of viewpoints, that shows the ever-changing face of calamity and offers countless ways we can fight it. Elliott has written 11 songs that honestly reckon with life’s burdens while never leaving the listener in despair. WW&T, from its attic to its root cellar, is optimistic and encouraging. It does what all great albums do: It invites a listener to fall in love with both the music and the message. Between its joy, heartache, expertise and timeless feel, Weed, Wine & Time is a veritable gumbo of great music. It is a sonic dish carefully prepared with affection and served with the intent to move and to please. WW&T begs you to taste and see. Which is fitting when you consider that Louisiana-born Elliott believes, “Nothing says I love you more than making someone a gumbo.”
